Who knew? Seems nobody did. Not until these smart scientists recently shot this video and figured it out, did anyone know the real technique dogs use to slurp liquids. And I gotta admit, I never thought much about how I drink. But the truth is–we drink backwards! Huh? Yep. It’s hard to explain with words so I better let the video visuals do the ‘splainin Lucy.

The scientists are A. W. Crompton and Catherine Musinsky, of Harvard University, and Crompton’s dog Matilda, is the one doing the slurping. Hey, there’s also an amazing video in the middle of the clip that reveals the way hummingbirds drink. Their tongue lapping is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen. After that, there’s an x-ray view of how the dog drinking thing works. This video comes from the NPR “Science Friday” podcast site. It’s one of my fave podcasts and you should check it out sometime. Bottoms up!
